Menthol Cigarettes: Less or More Dangerous?

Menthol Cigarettes: Less or More Dangerous?

(ePharmaNews) – Menthol cigarettes are the current topic of a hot debate regarding their supposed harms and whether they are more or less dangerous than regular cigarettes. A new study says that menthol cigarettes cause fewer deaths due to lung cancer.

The study was published in Nicotine & Tobacco Research on March, 4th. The researchers analyzed the records from a smoking survey done in 1987, they traced the patients ten years later, and found that for every 10 deaths in regular cancer there are 7 deaths in menthol-cigarettes smokers for reasons related to lung cancer.

The reason for this decline is not determined yet, it might be the menthol per se, or the “lighter” design of the cigarettes and the better filters.

On the other hand, some opponents for menthol cigarettes argue that quitting smoking is harder with this type of cigarettes, adding that some studies have pointed out a presence of some synergic effect between nicotine and menthol, and that these flavors run additional risk of smoking in adolescence.

Anyway, outside both teams, some people continue their crusade against smoking, with flavor or without it!
