Red Meats Can Shorten Lives

Red Meats Can Shorten Lives

(ePharmaNews) – If you are a red meat fan, you probably should think about it twice, as a new study from Harvard University said that eating red meats can increase death rates.

Though the results are not surprising, this study finally confirmed that lamb and bovine meats can absolutely shorten the life span.

The study included the records of 100,000 persons who were free of cardiovascular diseases and cancer; those subjects were followed for 20 years, and were surveyed every four years regarding their diet.

The results found that those who consume moderate amounts of red meat had 13% increase in death rates, and 20% in subjects who eat processed red meat (i.e. hot dogs) on a daily basis.

“This study provides clear evidence that regular consumption of red meat, especially processed meat, contributes substantially to premature death,” said study author. “On the other hand, choosing more healthful sources of protein in place of red meat can confer significant health benefits by reducing chronic disease morbidity and mortality.”

The results were published on March,12th in Archives of Internal Medicine.
