TV Triggers Obesity Genes

TV Triggers Obesity Genes

(ePharmaNews) – Five years ago, scientists discovered the genes responsible for obesity and started studying it thoroughly. The latest of these studies found that TV activates obesity genes and push it into work.

The research was published by American Heart Association and found that watching TV for more than 4 hours a day can trigger obesity genes, while walking for half an hour a day can turn them off. Of course the results only apply to individuals predisposed to obesity by carrying those genes in the first place.

“While previous studies have looked at how physical activity affects genetic predispositions, this is the first study that directly looked at the effect of the sedentary behavior of television watching on the body mass index (BMI) of individuals with a genetic predisposition to obesity,” said Qibin Qi, Ph.D., study author and a post doctorate research fellow in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass.

“In our study, a brisk one-hour daily walk reduced the genetic influence towards obesity, measured by differences in BMI by half. On the other hand, a sedentary lifestyle marked by watching television four hours a day increased the genetic influence by 50 percent.” He adds.

It is worth mentioning that testing for obesity genes is not available for the public yet, doctors can ask about any affected relatives to predict whether the patient has them or not.

“These genes were just identified in the past five years and the exact functions of the genetic variants are still unknown. Future studies will be needed to uncover the underlying mechanisms.” Qi said.

Finally, the average hours an American spends in front of the TV is about 6 hours, so TV can be added to Hamburgers, Sodas and Pizzas as a reason for the widespread obesity.
