My Dear Doctor: You First!

My Dear Doctor: You First!

(ePharmaNews) – "Do you agree to be treated by a smoking doctor, or an obese one?" This interesting opinion poll was asked in one blog, whose owner says that patients no longer accept advices from a person that does not follow them. Moreover, he asks patients to change their physician if they are not "healthy" enough.

The invitation sounds for the most part true, according to a new American study, which says that doctors ignore advising patients about healthy lifestyle habits if physicians do not practice that lifestyle themselves.

In this study, which was done at Emory University, researchers asked 1000 physicians about their lifestyle habits and how often they follow the health advices regarding consuming healthy foods, cutting-down on salt, practicing sports and keeping ideal body weight. Also, they investigated about the advices those researchers give to their hypertensive patients.

The results revealed that only 66% of doctors consult their patients regarding lifestyle changes, and that doctors practicing sports at least once a week and those who do not smoke are tow-folds more likely to offer these kind of information.

Anyway, researchers were optimistic as they found that only 4% of physicians smoke, compared to 20% of physicians according to a survey done in 1975.
