Lowering-Cholesterol Drugs Can Prevent Lung Infection

Lowering-Cholesterol Drugs Can Prevent Lung Infection

(ePharmaNews) – Statins are cholesterol-lowering drugs that commonly taken by old people to lessen heart diseases' risk factors. Studies are continuously discovering new benefits of these medications, and the last one has proved that taking statins decreases the risk of pneumonia.

The study, which was published in Canadian Medical Association Journal, involved 18000 adults over 50 year-old, and concluded that patients using statins are 17% less likely to get lung infections.

"These data from a major randomized trial support the hypothesis that statin treatment may be associated with a modest protective effect against some infections," said lead researcher Dr. Victor Novack,"We consider this analysis to be an additional step toward a definite trial that will specifically investigate the statin effect on infection,".

Many current trials try to prove that taking statins prevent severe complications in patients with infections. Previous studies have already found that the rate of death from acute respiratory infection decreases with statins, which further supports the result of the current study, and add another benefit to a long list of statins', such as depression, Parkinson disease, prostate cancer and multiple sclerosis.

It is worth mentioning, that the effect of statins to decrease pneumonia rates is not sufficient to warrant the regular intake for this purpose."We would not recommend using statins for the prevention of the infectious disease," Dr.Novak says.
A final word about the mechanism lying behind the ability of statin pills to prevent all these disorders is still missing, as none of the previous studies were able to reveal the cause of these mysterious effects.
