Dense Breast More Prone for Cancer Recurrences

Dense Breast More Prone for Cancer Recurrences

(ePharmaNews) – Women over 50 who have dense breast tissues are more likely to suffer recurrences of breast cancer, according to Swedish research presented at the eighth European Breast Cancer Conference in Vienna yesterday March, 21st.

The study involved 1.774 women aged between 50 and 74 who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1993 and 1995 in Sweden. The researchers used mammography to calculate the density of breast tissues.

Dr.Louise Eriksson, the lead researcher, and her colleagues in Karolinska Institute found that women with more dense breasts were twice likely to have recurrences of breast cancer either in the breast itself, or the lymph nodes surrounding it.

"We found that if you have a percentage density PD at diagnosis of 25% or more, you have an almost two-fold increased risk of local recurrence in the breast and surrounding lymph nodes than women with a PD of less than 25%. However, density does not increase the risk of distant metastasis and has no effect on survival." said Dr Eriksson, "Our study shows that breast density before or at diagnosis should be taken into account even after diagnosis, for instance, when deciding on adjuvant treatment and follow-up routines; perhaps women with dense breasts should be followed more frequently or for a longer period of time in order to quickly spot any local recurrence."

Breast density differs from women to women and decreases with aging at a rate of 2% annually, with a peak around the menopause.
