Full Face Transplant Recipient Feels His Daughter's Kisses

Full Face Transplant Recipient Feels His Daughter's Kisses

(ePharmaNews) - The first full face transplant recipient in America says he can feel his daughter's kisses now, a year after the procedure. Dallas Wiens in follow up with his transplant team said he can use his face more than he expected.

While painting a church in 2008, Dallas’ head came into contact with a high-tension electrical line. As a result of the accident, Dallas was left without any facial features. The electrical line completely burned away his visage and left him with gaping wounds on his body and spinal cord injuries
At that point, the doctors told the Wiens family that Dallas would not survive. Through his faith and tenacity, Dallas set out to prove them wrong.

Spurred on by the desire to hold his two-year-old daughter Scarlette again, he learned to speak, threw aside his wheel chair, then he was introduced to the possibility of a full facial transplant. This rare and risky procedure had not yet been attempted in the United States.
A team of 30 surgeons and hospital staff performed the almost 17-hour surgery. The transplant surgery was a complete success and Dallas has been regaining facial muscular control and sensation every day.

Wiens says feeling his daughter's kisses has brought him to tears more than once. He also says he can go out with family and friends and not worry about what anyone thinks.
Scarlette says in one of the morning shows : “Daddy, you're so handsome”.

"I could have lived like I was, no problem, if I did not have my daughter," said Wiens, "But I could not bear the thought of her growing up and being asked questions, 'Why does your daddy look different?' And dealing with that all of her childhood."

Dallas Wiens is the second person who had a face transplant in this hospital, where James Mackie had partial face transplant in 2005.
the full facial transplant consider as a new procedure where the first were in Spain 2010,  and only six cases of full face transplant has recorded around  the world,  and the most recent was  in Turkey in February 24, 2012.
